Passing the CFA is not that tough if one has a background in finance or accounting and a few years of experience. Although the CFA is not a degree in accounting, these topics are covered in the curriculum as a foundation for investment analysis. It takes some accounting and financial understanding to value various asset classes. The CFA program will be tough if one does not have a background in accounting/finance because one must first understand reading and analyzing financial statements as well as having a fundamental understanding of accounting rules.

The vast curriculum requires 300–400 hours of  preparation for each level. Level 2 is more challenging than Level 3, in my opinion. The rewards and recognition for completing all three CFA levels are extremely substantial, and your dedication and hard work will ensure that the CFA prep is successful. Three years of your life are worth investing in this well-known investment program.

Honestly it is challenging. It is not impossible to complete the program; however, the official statistics indicate that fewer than half of students pass each exam.

Several factors contribute to the difficulty, few of them being:

    • There is plenty to learn. There are too many intricate topics. You most likely won’t recall anything from the first book when you’ve finished the last one. You must take the necessary time to read and practice your exercises repeatedly.
    • Some areas, like financial reporting or derivatives, will be challenging to comprehend if you don’t have a background in finance.

So, in my opinion, if you want to pass the CFA exam, you should enroll in coaching. I sought assistance from Quintedge. My experience was excellent. They gave me a lot of support throughout the whole thing, by using real-world examples to illustrate the topics in a way that was very apparent. I absolutely appreciate their method of teaching.

I won’t comment on whether CFA is challenging or not. Your interest will determine everything. If you have a thirst for knowledge about how financial markets operate and how financial instruments like shares, fixed income, and derivatives are priced, the CFA program is the ideal way to quench your thirst.

The issue is that students use any course as a tool to accomplish something, losing sight of the fact that the primary goal of taking one is to gain useful knowledge. And once you do that, everything else—including a job—will take care of itself.

According to me, CFA is not that difficult. I finished all three levels in a single go, with no level repeats. And it was easy for me. Markowitz’s theory, the Black Scholes model, and statistical analysis are just a few examples where having a solid mathematical foundation will be quite helpful (you would obtain one if you studied quantitative science or engineering).

Having said that, you should definitely devote at least 300 hours to exam preparation. And it must be distributed evenly over a period of six months. The last-minute effort won’t help. Many of my coworkers asked for a study break of two to three weeks, but they invariably ended up failing. So it is best to study every day rather than depending on the last few days.

    Good luck.

Yes, the CFA program is hard . The exams are difficult . But it depends on what and how you have studied in your graduation level. Whether you have concept clarity or or you  just mug up during exams. If you have good conceptual clarity (Especially of basic finance topics), then it will be easier to clear. Only 49% passed level 1 exam in Dec 2020. Having the right plan & discipline to follow the plan are essential skills for passing all three exams.

I received a B.com degree from a prestigious university and entered the quantitative finance field. I passed Level I, but a year or so later, I failed Level II. It is difficult, in my opinion. The difficulty is in the enormous quantity of material you have to learn; according to CFAI, you should plan to devote 300+ hours to each level. Level I would not be too tough if you already have a foundation in finance (like I did), but Level II is challenging.

You should treat each level as though it were a semester of a college course. Read every chapter, complete the majority of the exercises, and take several practice exams. Additionally, there are numerous resources and classes for exam preparation.

    All the Best!

CFA Level I exam has 180 questions that candidates must finish within a set amount of time, which is not an easy task. Candidates need more than just intelligence to succeed.

Although the CFA exams are quite difficult, candidates can increase their chances of passing by investing in preparation using prep resources (Like Quintedge, Wiley, Kaplan etc.), completing as many practice questions as they can, and adopting a well-organized study regimen.

Despite the difficulty of the CFA tests, it is worthwhile to pursue this certification since it shows a high degree of dedication and understanding, and there is a good chance that it will result in higher earnings than peers who are not chartered in the finance field.

The ability to work in a variety of sectors that require this degree of financial knowledge and competence is another benefit of passing the exams.
